Peace Corps placement and Devine Providence
Hey, I just wanted to share a very speical moment with you all.

Some of you know or knew I was thinking about volunteering for the Peace Corps. Well I did. Today I spoke with the recruiter but first I must tell a story.

I am not the church going type of guy. I know God is there for me when I need it.

I have 2 very close friends I consider(ed) my grandparents. Mr. & Mrs. Martin. Mr. Martin was a farmer his whole life, the oldest of 9 brothers and sisters, and the first in his family to go to colled (though all his brothers and sisters went after him). He was born in 1900, went to college to work with and for farmers, worked with the CCC during the depression, was a County Agent around Tennessee, and was a farmer his whole life. My father passed when I was 6 so he was the only 'Male Role Model' I had growing up. He passed when I was 14. Mrs. Martin is alive and doing well though she lives in an assisted living home.

I bought an old Jeep and was going to drive it up to school after a summer of repairs. The night was approaching and I in the jalopy followed by my friend Adam took off on the long 3 hour drive. Well about an hour from home I popped a wheel cyclinder (what makes drum brakes brake) and locked up a wheel. I loped along until I found a pasture and parked there. I walked up to the farm house to see if anyone was home. A brother and sisiter where there. They were in their 60's and just cutting the hay on the family farm before going to their homes. They wanted to know who I was and what I wanted on their property. I told the brother what happened and we got to talking. Not only did he know my grandfather but he worked under him when he did 4-H stuff with Mr. Martin when he was a child. He went to college for agriculture, and was a County Agent in a neighboring county with Mr. Martin for his last county (McMinn my home county). THere were quite a few other similarities but what it boils down to is Mr. Martin was looking out for me that day.

Well I have been placed in rural French Speaking Africa doing Agri/business. Teaching basic economics to farmers, establishing CoOps and farming networks, cost benefit analysis with farmers. I have been placed doing the exact same thing as my grandfathers life's work.

Some say chance but I see the hand of God, or at least Mr. Martin's presence in my life.

I've been on the verge of tears for a couple hours now.

Got my peace corps application all done. 4 refrences from a teacher, my Bounty Hunter supervisor, and 2 friends (Adam and Ryan).

I've done a bunch of research about different countries around the world where the Peace Corps has on going projects. Some are kinda scary but I guess I'm gonna go where they send me.

I've kind of had it and I'm reapplying to the Peace Corps.

Not going in 2003 is the only real regret of my life and I'm not doing myself any justice in saying "Well you can go when you're 40."  Cause there is no time like the present and I've got to do something with my life.

just got fired

Monday, November 29, 2004

So yeah I've been putting this off for a while.

I've got a job.  I'm a CNC operator at a place in Etowah.  Its a line job at a VERY small plant, but there is a new line going in so I've got lots of room to go up.  There are only like 35 people that work there, 2 Engineers, 5 front office / HR / shipping and recieving type people, 1 maintenance guy (who doesn't know baby shit from apple butter), 3 shift leaders, 9 CNC operators, and something like 15 floorworkers.

I'm working 3rds which is a REAL bitch.  SO you'll see lots of early mornin' posts.  They pay is good, tonight was my 4th night and there have been 4 people fired, one guy quit, and a couple of one day temps.  In rank I'm the #3 guy on my shift and by seinority i'm #6.

I run 4 CNC Vertical Lathes, take measurements off the parts, and then adjust the CNC lathe accordingly.  I also have to clean the parts in prepariation for going to paint but that is just blowing the metal chips out and then wiping them with a rag.  I also have to inspect them for defects either from the maching process or casting related.

I scrapped 5 parts tonight cause I was trying to get one dimension adjusted and another dimension fell so far out of tolerance that the parts could not be saved.  But hell its still my 4th night I'm not really sure how everything works just yet.

The Incredibles RULES!!  Its funny as shit, and a very mature movie considering its from Pixar.  There are super hero deaths and well death in general so its not all happy and fun but DAMN is it good.
